MVP Award

The Salvation Army Fuqua Boys and Girls Club located in Downtown Atlanta works with 99 kids every day.  The club offers young people what they need most… adults who respect and listen to them, a safe environment where they can have fun and be themselves, and interesting constructive activities that channel youthful energy into challenging pursuits.  The club was awarded a building assessment and funding for energy and water efficiency projects as part of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America energy and water efficiency grant program.  The club’s efforts made joining the Atlanta Better Buildings Challenge an obvious choice as both goals aligned well.

The club used implementation grant funding to install web-based programmable thermostats, LED lighting and occupancy-based lighting controls, a new drinking fountain with a filtered water bottle refill station, vending machine controls, a timer to the domestic hot water circulating pump, and high efficiency plumbing fixtures.  The club has reduced its energy use by 48% and water use by 30%, saving more than $17,000 annually.
